The Bibliothèque Nationale de France (French National Library) was created in 1994 with the mission of “collecting, cataloguing, preserving and enriching all the field of knowledge and national heritage, in particular the inheritance of French language or relating to French civilization”

Business Challenges

• Implement an information-management system to address the long-term availability of electronic publications.
• Enable the institution to consolidate data storage and ensure availability and access control over an unlimited period of time.
• Develop and deploy a long-term preservation strategy compliant with the Open Archive Information System (OAIS). The preservation policy aims to guarantee: preservation, good response times and support of all type of incoming flow of digital information.

• Our solution is based on several types of open source software and supports the IRods abstraction layer for storage.
• It includes a methodology based on the OAIS model and PAIMAS (Producer-Archive Interface Methodology Abstract Standard).

• A system contributing to OAIS certification and good practice for preservation.
• Access to digital information on a very long-term basis, thus resolving traditional issues such as obsolescence of formats and storage mediums.
• A powerful and modular system allowing the management of more than one billion numerical objects and more than 1,800 TB of data in a synchronous and asynchronous way.
